Pump Technology

Industrial Pump Systems

From high-volume centrifugal transfer to dewatering, wastewater and high-pressure multistage duties.

What Determines the Correct Pump?

A pump should be selected against the system, not only a catalogue flow figure. The required operating point is created by the interaction between the pump curve and the system resistance curve.

Hydraulic Duty

  • Required flow rate and normal/minimum/maximum operating flow
  • Static lift plus friction losses through pipework, fittings and valves
  • Total dynamic head at the required flow
  • Suction pressure, elevation and available NPSH
  • Whether speed control or throttling will be used

Liquid & Mechanical Conditions

  • Density, viscosity, temperature and vapour pressure
  • Solids concentration, particle size and abrasiveness
  • Corrosive or chemically aggressive constituents
  • Seal arrangement, bearing environment and expected run hours
  • Material compatibility for casing, impeller, shaft and elastomers
Important: catalogue operating envelopes are not a substitute for a confirmed duty point. Final motor power, impeller selection and NPSH margin should be verified for the actual installation.

Understanding a Pump Curve

A centrifugal pump curve normally shows how head changes as flow changes at a given speed and impeller diameter. Efficiency, absorbed power and NPSH required may also be plotted.

  • BEP: Best Efficiency Point is the region where hydraulic efficiency is highest and radial loads are generally better balanced.
  • Duty point: The intersection of pump performance and the system curve.
  • NPSHr: The suction head required by the pump to limit cavitation under test conditions.
  • Power: Driver selection must include absorbed power at the intended operating range and an appropriate margin.
